From mid-December on, there is a change in lighting conditions. In spite of shorter days, reflection off snow intensifies the light, and this serves rather as a renewed inspiration to those who create images. This may explain at least in part the motivation for an annual progress report.
Looking back, therefore, here are some of the significant events:
Plus/No Uncertain Terms succeeded in bringing together content producers from several regions of the country to join with representatives of the market in order to tackle the complex issue of intellectual property rights.
RODEO, the first CAPIC competition for students, resulted in an additional 150 student members as well as several links to new sponsors. Xpose returned in its 2009 version and showcased CAPIC talent on the walls of Wychwood Barns.
CAPIC was a strong presence at consultations organized by Industry Canada. A new team of professionals was put in place to administer the affairs of the association.
CAPIC received $25,000 in December after the ruling was handed down in the Robertson vs Thompson class action lawsuit. Members also benefited from several dozen educational, creative, and social events throughout the country.
There is no doubt that in 2010 CAPIC will continue to move forward in bringing benefits to image producers. It is our desire to work harder to promote ourselves, to advocate for intellectual property rights, and to educate. Till then, in the name of the entire team, I would like to wish you a joyous holiday season.

I know those of you who knew him will feel as shocked and crushed by this as we do here in Ottawa. Marc was a very positive force in the room at any meeting he attended, and it was most of them. Marc had great ideas and was always a volunteer when we needed someone to fly the flag for CAPIC. Marc was also the past editor of the CAPIC News. When it was an actual printed newsletter. A task to which I can attest requires a lot of time and effort.
There was an open house hosted by his family at his home on Saturday December 05.
If you wish to sign an online book of remembrance you can do so at this link: Marc Guertin Remembrance .
The obituary is as follows:
GUERTIN, Marc It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Marc Guertin on Saturday, November 28th. Marc was the beloved husband of Hillary, cherished father of Johanna (John) and Jeff (Jessica) and most wonderful Pappy to Lucas, Zoe, Olivia, Mia and Grace. Dear son of Ethel and the late Roland Guertin, brother of Dennis (Robin), Rollie (Margot) and Jacques (Jacqueline). Favourite son-in-law of Helen Catterill & brother-in-law of Tim (Helen Jean). Lovingly remembered by Marisa Arpaia. It is with happiness that we will remember Marc as a talented artist, boat builder and woodworker, a man who cherished his family and the great Canadian outdoors. Interment at Pinecrest Cemetery. Family and friends are invited to Marc and Hillary's home on Saturday December 5, 2009 from 11:00 am-4:00 pm. Our sincere thanks to everyone for their compassion and support. In memoriam, donations to the Christie Lake Kids ( christielakekids.com ) would be appreciated.

Upcoming event:
Thursday January 21 2010 at 19:00 in Photo-Service studios, an evening devoted to creativity with Claude Charlebois: Mastering the Codex of our Creativity.
Rediscovering the hidden sources of creativity through an approach to photography that is philosophical as well as practical, from the perspective of a visual artist. Technical aspects are thankfully sidelined in favor of an expanding voyage to his favorite playground- art, while he addresses questions of why and how to refine a vision that is unique to oneself and how to live a life focused on creativity in day-to-day life.
Claude Charlebois has devoted himself to creativity and human potential for a long time. Starting out as a painter, he realized that photography offered means of expression which were better suited to his vision. He likes to say that "If Leonardo da Vinci were alive today, he would be a photographer."

Mobile Photographer's Moving Picture Takes 1st Place at International Photography Awards
Vancouver photographer Kristopher Grunert has just received confirmation that his innovative and stirring time-lapse photography project titled "My City Moves Me" has taken 1st place in the 2009 International Photography Awards - Moving Image category.
Show/Hide complete story »

Photograph Copyright 2009 - Kristopher Grunert
The work is a series of 712 individual photos linked together to create the illusion of movement, emphasizing the life and breath of structures, and features the Vancouver Sky Train.
"The IPA has become one of the most significant awards in the industry. It is an absolute honor to receive such recognition, especially in this new category. Moving pictures has obviously been around for a long time but many feel this the beginning of a new era as technology is allowing still photographers to apply their trained eye to the medium."
Photograph Copyright 2009 - Kristopher Grunert
Ironically, the announcement comes just as Grunert himself is embarking on his own moving picture--the decision to take his Vancouver based company and studio GRUNERT IMAGING mobile. While travel has always been a part of his 10 year career--photographing mines, wind farms, water treatment plants and prime real estate projects across Canada, the US, UK, and Central/ South America Grunert feels ready for a significant creative pilgrimage.
He will be feeding his visual appetite with new landscapes, imagery, and experiences as he travels between urban, rural and industrial scenes from the Alberta Oil Sands, Saskatchewan, Toronto,New York,LA and Mexico.
Not only is it important to me to expand my visual repertoire, my goal is to extend the reach of the geographic markets that I serve."
Part of the journey will include his annual trip to NYC for the Lucie Awards(the Oscar Awards of photography) where this year his new series of still photographs "The Seylynn Lights"has received honorable mention and his 1st place entry"My City Moves Me"will be featured in the Annual IPA Best of Show.
The debut of this exhibition takes place as a prelude to the Lucies, held this year on Sat. Oct. 17at the infamous Splashlight Studios in Soho.
As usual, he will also attend the PDN Photo Expo where he reconnects with international suppliers and "sharpens his saw" by learning technical and business skills from industry leaders.
In the new year, Grunert Imaging will launch what he calls digital asset management solutions for the corporate market.
"I have seen companies struggle to manage their libraries of digital images as they continue to grow, and I want to make sure that my clients can use the assets I create in the most effective manner possible. If managed correctly, the photographs have the potential to increase in value exponentially for uses such as publicity, corporate communications, award submissions, and company morale."
Kristopher emphasizes that he will have a continued presence in Vancouver, servicing his clients and continuing to work with his local suppliers.
"I am very proud of the relationships that I have built here--they are the foundation of my business and I am committed to building on that foundation. My intention is for everyone I associate with to benefit from this endeavor.
Grunert has been creating memorable commercial photographs for local design firms such as Porcaro Communications servicing clients such asF inning International, Teck Cominco, and BC Ferries) and most recently with DDB Canada (Karacters Design)for the Vancouver Convention Centre. He was also the co-founder and co-curator of LUMEN gallery with Emmanuel St.Juste, which has brought light-inspired art and events to the city, and has served on the board of the Canadian Association of Photographers and Illustrators (CAPIC) as VP of membership for the last 2 years. He is looking forward to meeting other members across the country and contributing to the prairie chapter in the new year.
During his mobile experiment, Kristopher and wife Chelsea will be using his family homestead in Saskatchewan as their headquarters and are excited to be converting a grain silo into his new studio. The Grunert farm has been in operation for over 130 years, and Grunert's adventure will begin next month by working and documenting the annual harvest with three generations of his family present.
"The Seylynn Lights"series is being featured at On The Rise Artist Collective, 2231 Granville St. Vancouver, BC from Wednesday to Sunday, 11 am - 6 pm until August 30th.
"My City Moves Me"the award-winning submission can be seen at grunertimaging.com/MyCityMovesMe
Grunert can be reached now, and during his mobile adventure at kristopher@grunertimaging.com or 604-809-9155
Please direct any questions or comments regarding this announcement to Kristopher Grunert at press@grunertimaging.com or 604-809-9155.
Why join CAPIC?
CAPIC is the collective voice and advocate for professional photographers, illustrators and digital artists in Canada. We work hard to maintain industry standards, create a community, fight for copyright protection, and much more. Our work helps all the professionals in our industry, but only members benefit fully. We are active at the federal government level, working to promote the rights of artists and lobbying to have the Canadian Copyright Act changed to give Canadian photographers the same protection offered in other countries.

Here are some of the benefits of joining CAPIC:
Educational and social events
Members of CAPIC are connected with colleagues that share related experiences, ideas and stories. CAPIC local chapters regularly organize educational and social events for the benefit of members and the photographic and illustrator community.
Helping the illustrator and photographic community
Becoming a CAPIC member is the best way to endorse the association that is the collective voice and advocate for professional photographers, illustrators and digital artists in Canada. Although much behind the scenes, these efforts are directly reflected in standards used by the industry and the contracts written by magazines, agencies, corporate clients and governments.
Web portal: Find a Photographer/Illustrator
The CAPIC website is an amazing repertoire of the most professional photographers and illustrators in Canada. When art buyers search for photographers or illustrators, CAPIC website lists creators that can be counted on for their professionalism. Such websites and portals range between $500 and $1000. As a member of CAPIC, this advertising tool is free!
Contest and Shows
Exclusive to CAPIC members, Xpose and Rodeo are yearly national contests with a huge impact! Xpose finalists see their pictures printed in a book distributed to art buyers across the country and exposed during the photography festival in Toronto. Similarly, the highly attended student contest Rodeo is exposed but with the extra reward of great prizes from sponsors.
Double Vision … where a photographer and an Illustrator are paired up to create portraits of each other, which are then put on display, side by side, at a Gallery event. Once a month CAPIC hosts a Xchange ‘pub’ evening, where all members and non-members, along with ad agency people, are invited to exchange ideas and their work.
