THE 4TH ANNUAL ASSOCIATION BBQ REVIEW
Another resounding success for everyone involved! Once again CAPIC, the GDC, BCID SIggraph and TAAC worked together to bring over 135 members, families, friends and 4 legged companions to Trout Lake Park for a perfect mix of social visits and good food. The weather cooperated after a day of Vancouver drizzle when the clouds parted and the sun warmed us all just as we started to set up.
After months of planning menus, quantities, logistics, sustainability, sponsorship and most importantly croquet and boccie courses it really was a flawless event. Kudos to the GDC team and all of the volunteers that helped make this happen. The event poster and invitation design should win awards for the most creative use of mustard as a type font. Our grill chefs kept themselves warm over the BBQ as they cooked almost 130 burgers, dozens of hotdogs and who knows what else.
The liquid refreshments were augmented by the addition of the "Pedal Pulverizer" a stationary bike with a blender driven by the flywheel. Through the evening many very tasty non-alcoholic fruit slushies were created using this device built by Daryll Cassidy. A party must have for future events! ( there is video footage being edited for YouTube so you can see it at work).
Once again our sponsors came through with amazing draw prizes and cash support. Without their generosity, these events would be much harder to accomplish! Please check out the list and keep them in mind when you need supplies or services.
Thanks again to all who made this happen and especially to Byron Smith for his monster grill and Darren Carcary from the GDC who kept the logistics under control!
From our success this year, it proves that cooperative efforts with our peers make great sense. I look forward to the 5th annual BBQ next year, it should be even bigger and better!
WHAT THE PARTICIPANTS HAD TO SAY:
My first ever CAPIC event as a new member and I made great contacts, lined up 2 assistants, got an amazing offer for help from one of the best in the business, and had fabulous food.
What a first class event. I see now why CAPIC is so strong- significant volunteerism and energy. Thanks to everyone for making new members feel so welcome.
- Paul Wright - Wright Moments Photography
The CAPIC barbecue was a fantastic event on a perfect evening on Trout Lake. I came with my extended family and we all scored our best hotdog and hamburger with fixings of the summer. Yes I had both and put the mango guacamole as a fixing on my hamburger, which was fabulous.
Lawn games were really fun and competitive...Yes I did cheat, but l let every-one else cheat also. I enjoyed meeting the next generation of CAPIC members and the full grown children of the tried and true loyal members that have come down the ages....just living proof that it is possible to span a photography career of 28 years. and have kids ...you know who you are!!!!!!
Bring on the croquette for next year...maybe volleyball at the beach?
- Kharen Hill - Public Pictures
It was nice coming out to the bbq for a good ol' burger and hot dogs and seeing lots of new faces. Would have liked to see more photographers come out and take part. But it was a good night and I enjoyed talking with those I did.

There wasn't a single bale of hay at Not Another %#*! Stampede Party 2010. Some of CAPIC's best gamers and wannabe musicians came out to play at Trilogy Studios in Calgary on July 14. GDC and The Camera Store staff joined us for burgers on the barbie, drinks and battles on the Wii.

Creating New Links
CAPIC Vancouver continues to maintain a very active schedule. Our planning through the fall and early Spring includes our famous 4th Annual Multi Association BBQ, co-hosted with the GDC. We are making an effort to link closely with our peers, related associations and schools to broaden our communication, extend our network and bring a new younger membership into CAPIC.
We are able to extend our resources and effectiveness in ways that would not otherwise be possible within the Chapter. During a recent Chapter Presidents phone conference call, I suggested that the entire organization work towards creating more national programs and events, share speakers' expenses by creating a series and have a more cohesive feel to CAPIC across the country. There is active research taking place to make this happen. Details will be shared as soon as these are able.
We are also planning our next Portfolio Speed Review, Clip-Up Nights and exploring the way to involve the Chapter with the local Slideluck Potshow. My thanks goes to our board for helping steer all these events!
Tax Lobby to benefit our Membership
One other area that Vancouver is taking the lead on is a new initiative dealing with changing the Canada Revenue Agencies Capital Cost Allowance rating on digital cameras to more accurately reflect the speed at which our equipment becomes obsolete and needs to be replaced to keep up with the changes in technology.
Depreciation is currently set at 5 years, as photo equipment is not given a category except as "other". In comparison, new computers are 100% deductible in the year purchased, under a special provision until early 2011. If you purchase a new $20,000 camera now, you can only deduct 20% or $4000 (from your gross income) in the first year and then 20% of $16,000 (only $3200) in the second year etc.
The tax savings will depend on your income but if we are able to reduce the depreciation from 5 to 2 or 3 years you will be saving far more than the costs of membership each year! Roughly, savings at a 25% tax rate could be $2000 per year over the existing CRA rules based on a $20,000 camera.
The Vancouver Chapter is providing seed money to seek an opinion from a tax lawyer to find the best way to accomplish our goal. We will be looking to align with other professional photography organizations to lobby the CRA with us. Once we have determined the best approach and have an estimate of costs we could come to the membership to help with the financial costs of the lobby ( a very good investment ). If you have any ideas or wish to help in the major benefit to the members please get in touch with me.

HST (Harmonized Sales Tax) for Ontario and British Colombia is here as of July 1st, 2010.
All vendors who are registered to collect GST are automatically registered to collect HST.
If you currently collect GST and PST there will be no change in tax amount collected. Those who were collecting GST only will now be collecting more tax, HST.
A GST registrant in a non-HST province who sells goods to a HST province must collect the HST. A registrant in a HST province who sells goods delivered to a non-HST province would collect only the GST, not the HST.
Generally, the HST is applicable to any amount that becomes due on or after July 1st. There are some exceptions. For more information, see Canada Revenue Agency publication.
If you complete a project and deliver the photographs before July 1st but invoice the customer after July 1st, then you charge HST. For more information, see Canada Revenue Agency publication.
Please verify your particular situation with Revenue Canada at 1-800-959-5525.
The HST introduction also influences the CAPIC membership fees. Starting July 1st, 2010, CAPIC increased its membership fees for Ontario, British Columbia and the Atlantic Provinces members in order to reflect the implementation of the HST tax. Quebec and Prairie Provinces members will not have their membership fees changed. Please refer to the CAPIC website for the updated membership fees.
Good Luck!

Bonne chance!

One of CAPIC's mandates is to promote its members! In an effort to promote CAPIC's young talent, we introduced a new section in CAPIC's monthly newsletter devoted to promoting CAPIC's Emerging Talent members, young and creative photographers and illustrators who are in the process of establishing their names in their respective fields. In order to help them make an impact in the industry, we present today the first Emerging Talent member, Nancy Falconi.
For Nancy Falconi photography is a reunion with a long lost love that dates back to the photos she took of her sisters as a child. That sense of childhood wonder and love continues to influence her work. Her images have evolved to include all that inspires her life today: family, relationships, and her passion for health and yoga. Her images are authentic, natural, and uplifting. Above all, Falconi has the ability to look at her subject and capture its essence in an instant.
Her business has recently expanded to include video. It was a natural progression given that her emotive style lends itself nicely to motion and visual story telling. Nancy specializes in travel, conceptual lifestyle, and custom portraits. Her stock images are represented by Getty images and she is a photographer member for the charitable organization Now I Lay Me Down To Sleep.

Now I Lay Me Down To Sleep.

Vancouver - Selina Maitreya's Lecture Survive? Think THRIVE!
A return visit of Selina Maitreya to present Survive? Think Thrive!
Afficher / Masquer tout l'article »

On June 17, 2010 CAPIC Vancouver hosted another in our series of great informative business practice events with a return visit of Selina Maitreya to present Survive? Think Thrive! The evening based on recognizing that you must work hard to thrive, not allow your mindset to go to survival mode in these more challenging days in our industry.
Stressing (in her quiet way) that we must know what "our product" is to sell before we choose the tools to market, promote and sell ourselves to the clients that we want to work for. Common sense ideas presented with encouragement and candor.
Selina followed what is no doubt, the most common refrain we have heard at all of our events about consistent vision. A singular way of seeing, that sets you apart and will allow clients to have the confidence in your consistency and abilities to execute their assignments. She stressed this applies through all of your marketing and branding on web, emails and portfolio.
She covered many bases including the importance of utilizing social media in marketing ourselves. Being Twitter phobic myself, I had to look with an open mind at her love of Tweeting. In the grand scheme of selling in person and adding a personal touch by remaining in contact by the world of social media, twitter makes sense.
In the not so distant past, I recall AD's said that keeping in touch 4-6 times a year was a great way of balancing top of mind with intrusion. Now with the advent of twitter and Facebook it seems several updates a week is becoming normal. (or is that several a day?)
Selina's personality and professionalism helped make her nearly three-hour presentation seem short and if time allowed, could have easily continued to keep the audience informed for much longer.
At the evening's conclusion all attendees agreed that there was a lot of information and insight shared by Selina.
Attendees Speak Out
Inspired and overwhelmed. Selina offers a very practical road map, based on action, for success in commercial photography. Straightforward and brilliant.
Thank you,
- Amanda Oster
I've been listening to Selina speak for years now. She has a unique message that evolves with the industry but the foundation of it never changes. She stays current with trends and practices, but the nuts and bolts of what she's telling photographers to do is the same. She wants photographers to practice being photographers. No matter what stage in the game you're at, it really has to become the mantra of every photographer. She's very clear that with practice and tenacity anybody and everybody can create their own success.
- Adam Blasberg
Having only attended a few CAPIC events thus far, I have found the community to be very warm and welcoming, not to mention highly educational. From the event topics covered to the friendly conversations that happen before and after, I am learning constantly. Even if I hadn't just won a door-prize gift certificate for an Agency Access membership, I'd still be singing the praises of the value of membership. As a student and soon-to-be graduate, it's a complete no-brainer: the membership is worth a hundred times it's price (literally, in my case)! CAPIC is a valuable tool for me, and a breath of creative fresh air.
- Gabriel Hall
From Selina Herself:
Thanks for the opportunity to share my new program: Survive? Think THRIVE! with your Vancouver CAPIC group. I felt like I was home again as its always such a pleasure to speak in Vancouver. Wonderful people and photographers invested in growing, and learning. The day following the presentation I received emails from people who attended the event thanking me for sharing information that they felt would change heir career for the better. Doesn't get much better than that!
- Selina Maitreya
Once again, our chapter is truly appreciative of the support of our sponsors for their donations and door prizes. Their participation has helped CAPIC Vancouver offer a tremendous series of informative events to our members and the industry.
Agency Access - Mailing list membership - winner - Gabriel Hall
Selina Maitreya - View From Here MP3 Series - winner - Johann Wall
Ray Lum Photography - 6hr studio rental winner - winner - Amanda Oster

On May 15, 2010, Montreal was the host city of the CAPIC General Meeting. This was an excellent experience! We took advantage of the weekend to work together on the future of the Association, and attended the CAPIC Lifetime Achievement Awards and the Montreal xpose 2010 show opening.
This year, at the General Meeting we took time to answer questions and note the members' suggestions. I sincerely believe that this time was well spent. We also disclosed the results of our Friday Strategy Session.
The traditional Friday work session was particularly fruitful. There were fifteen people in attendance, and following a full day strategy session, we were able to determine the Association's goals and actions for the months ahead. With a clear picture of our finances, we decided to act in three directions: promotion of the members and the Association, improvement of CAPIC copyright representation, and redesign of the website. In addition, by November 2010, CAPIC will have a refreshed image to better represent the future of image creators.
We now set off on new challenges. This time, the aim is to offer more services. I hope that you will appreciate this effort.

CAPIC's Copyright Chair, André Cornellier, is pleased to share exciting news with CAPIC's members.
OTTAWA, June 2, 2010:
Canadian photographers welcome the introduction of copyright reform.
The Canadian Photographers Coalition (CPC) congratulates the Federal Government on the introduction of copyright reform legislation. The Copyright Modernization Act includes a provision to award photographers first ownership on commissioned works; a right held by all other creators.
"Today is a great day for Canadian photographers," stated André Cornellier, Coalition Co-chair. "The Copyright Act is an important policy tool for the promotion of Canada's culture and Canadians' creativity. As professional photographers, we understand first-hand the importance of ensuring a modern Copyright Act promotes both of these objectives."
"These amendments allow Canadian small business photographers the opportunity to generate additional revenues for their commercial work. At the same time, they strike a balance by allowing consumers the use of commissioned personal photographs for private non-commercial purposes," Cornellier added.
"In 2008, we welcomed Bill C-61 and its recognition of photographers as equals among their creative colleagues. Including similar provisions in this Bill, Heritage Minister James Moore and Industry Minister Tony Clement have again committed to ending this inequity," said Brian Boyle, Coalition Co-chair.
The Canadian Photographers Coalition was formed to support the extension of copyright fairness to Canada's working professional photographers. The Coalition represents the interests of two professional associations: the Canadian Association of Photographers and Illustrators in Communications (CAPIC) and the Professional Photographers of Canada (PPOC).
Together the groups represent professional photographers working in all aspects of the craft and in all regions of the country. There are over 14,000 professional photographers working and living in Canadian communities from coast to coast. Over 95 per cent of professional photographers are small business people, owning, operating and working in their own businesses and dependent on sales of their work to support their families. Like all small business people, photographers are part of the engine that drives the Canadian economy.

2nd CAPIC Vancouver Portfolio Speed Reviews
Without doubt, one of the most successful and rewarding events that CAPIC Vancouver has put together!
Afficher / Masquer tout l'article »

Without doubt, one of the most successful and rewarding events that CAPIC Vancouver has put together! There was a fantastic turnout of reviewers representing the best design houses and advertising agencies in the city including Cossette, Karacters, Emdoublyou Design, and Hangar 18. This was matched by a real cross-section of photographers showing their best work. According to the reviewers, there were some stunning world class quality portfolios being shown.
Reviewers repeatedly noted that artists that they had seen last year, had taken and acted on their advice to greatly improve the overall impact and quality of their books. This was a clear indication to them of the value of the event . The designers all felt that this was time well spent. Meeting new talent, reacquainting themselves with others and being part of the community was worth every minute.
Each of the artists felt the quality of the reviews. Although five minutes often felt like only two, it created a focused and intense session which was truly like speed dating ( for those who have done that) after which they hoped that could lead to follow-up meetings and potential work.
There is no other comparable business environment that brings so many artists and buyers together to meet.
The event committee, volunteers and board members all worked hard to organize this event that saw virtually every participant in the reviews having their portfolio seen and commented on by every one of the 12 reviewers. To everyone's real appreciation, that exceeded all expectations. A giant thank you to all of the reviewers for staying on to finish!
Comments and Quotes from the evening:
It really was a fabulous evening. It was exhausting, but extremely rewarding. The reviews are a great opportunity for us to offer some guidance on how to get the most impact from a well designed portfolio presentation.
Vida Jurcic - Hangar 18
It was a pleasure. Overall I found the night very organized and quality of work shown to be quite high. A shame not one illustrators showed up. Local reps should be slapped for not encouraging their clients to attend. :-( Thank you again for inviting us to participate,
Mark Busse - Industrial Brand Creative
Thanks for having me last night, it was my pleasure.
Calvin Ho Vancouver MacLaren McCann
"Good to see some new younger talent, not sure how you attract this and even getting some of the more established shooters to attend."
James Bateman - Karacters Design Group
"Thanks for the opportunity to present my work to a variety of art directors in an atmosphere that is both relaxed and analytical. It has been invaluable to my development as a photographer."
Leanna Rathkelly - Whistler
"If you need a reason to join CAPIC, it is the Portfolio Speed Review. A must attend event for both professionals and amateurs."
Pooya Nabei - Pooya Nabei Photography
No question that this event would sell out very quickly next time. It is truly worth the cost of admission and even a better when you are a member. Make sure you express your interest early to insure a seat at the next event. (TBD)
A special thank you to all of our sponsors; without their support these events could not take place.

Art Directors John Edmonds (Green Eggs Creative), James Filbry (Spring Advertising), Dean Ponto (Dean Ponto Creative), and Vida Jurcic (Hangar 18 Creative Group) graciously donated their evening to speak to a room filled with over 35 CAPIC members and some non-members about everything on the topic of building and showing your portfolio to Art and Creative Directors. Thank you to them all!
"It's like putting make up on a pig" was a memorable quote from the night, and was a common thread to their advice: choose your absolute best work for your portfolio, and above the paper choice, the housing, etc, the work itself has to shine through.
Also unanimous were comments about seeing personal work, staying true to one style, and giving your online portfolio the same care and attention as you do your print portfolio (and yes, they all still want to see a print portfolio!)
A big thank you to our event sponsors: Beau Photo, Vancouver Photo Workshops, and Gold Sponsors Hemlock Printers Ltd., and Shrapnel Design.
Door prizes graciously donated by Shrapnel Design and were won by new General Member Barry Gnyp and Student Member Jennifer Schmidt from Western Academy.

The purpose of the get together was to have an informal and open discussion about the role of the association in Ottawa and the value of membership.
About one third of the membership turned out for this meeting.
The discussion ranged from ideas for future events, the "democratization" of the craft and the resulting shrinkage of photo assignments for other then highly creative or complex work, and the relevance of an association like CAPIC in a community of creative professionals.
Before the meeting got underway, a presentation was made to Randy Harquail. Randy received the award for Outstanding Contribution to CAPIC in 2009. His plaque was presented at the 2009 President's Dinner by then president Ewan Nicholson to Tom Evans the Ottawa Chapter President. Randy was unable to attend the National AGM. Events in 2009 unfolded in a way that prohibited the plaque from being presented to Randy in a suitable way until this meeting, almost a year late. Amazingly Randy was surprised and word of the award had not leaked out in all that time.
Plans are afoot for some worthwhile activities including an exhibition.
Encouraged by the success of the other chapters, CAPIC Ottawa will create and market meaningful events that will raise the profile of the association in this market and give people a chance to meet with some of the best and brightest in their field.

Upcoming event:
Thursday January 21 2010 at 19:00 in Photo-Service studios, an evening devoted to creativity with Claude Charlebois: Mastering the Codex of our Creativity.
Rediscovering the hidden sources of creativity through an approach to photography that is philosophical as well as practical, from the perspective of a visual artist. Technical aspects are thankfully sidelined in favor of an expanding voyage to his favorite playground- art, while he addresses questions of why and how to refine a vision that is unique to oneself and how to live a life focused on creativity in day-to-day life.
Claude Charlebois has devoted himself to creativity and human potential for a long time. Starting out as a painter, he realized that photography offered means of expression which were better suited to his vision. He likes to say that "If Leonardo da Vinci were alive today, he would be a photographer."

I know those of you who knew him will feel as shocked and crushed by this as we do here in Ottawa. Marc was a very positive force in the room at any meeting he attended, and it was most of them. Marc had great ideas and was always a volunteer when we needed someone to fly the flag for CAPIC. Marc was also the past editor of the CAPIC News. When it was an actual printed newsletter. A task to which I can attest requires a lot of time and effort.
There was an open house hosted by his family at his home on Saturday, December 5, 2009.
If you wish to sign an online book of remembrance you can do so at this link: Marc Guertin Remembrance .
The obituary is as follows:
GUERTIN, Marc It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Marc Guertin on Saturday, November 28th. Marc was the beloved husband of Hillary, cherished father of Johanna (John) and Jeff (Jessica) and most wonderful Pappy to Lucas, Zoe, Olivia, Mia and Grace. Dear son of Ethel and the late Roland Guertin, brother of Dennis (Robin), Rollie (Margot) and Jacques (Jacqueline). Favourite son-in-law of Helen Catterill & brother-in-law of Tim (Helen Jean). Lovingly remembered by Marisa Arpaia. It is with happiness that we will remember Marc as a talented artist, boat builder and woodworker, a man who cherished his family and the great Canadian outdoors. Interment at Pinecrest Cemetery. Family and friends are invited to Marc and Hillary's home on Saturday December 5, 2009 from 11:00 am-4:00 pm. Our sincere thanks to everyone for their compassion and support. In memoriam, donations to the Christie Lake Kids ( christielakekids.com ) would be appreciated.

Why join CAPIC?
CAPIC is the collective voice and advocate for professional photographers, illustrators and digital artists in Canada. We work hard to maintain industry standards, create a community, fight for copyright protection, and much more. Our work helps all the professionals in our industry, but only members benefit fully. We are active at the federal government level, working to promote the rights of artists and lobbying to have the Canadian Copyright Act changed to give Canadian photographers the same protection offered in other countries.

Here are some of the benefits of joining CAPIC:
Educational and social events
Members of CAPIC are connected with colleagues that share related experiences, ideas and stories. CAPIC local chapters regularly organize educational and social events for the benefit of members and the photographic and illustrator community.
Helping the illustrator and photographic community
Becoming a CAPIC member is the best way to endorse the association that is the collective voice and advocate for professional photographers, illustrators and digital artists in Canada. Although much behind the scenes, these efforts are directly reflected in standards used by the industry and the contracts written by magazines, agencies, corporate clients and governments.
Web portal: Find a Photographer/Illustrator
The CAPIC website is an amazing repertoire of the most professional photographers and illustrators in Canada. When art buyers search for photographers or illustrators, CAPIC website lists creators that can be counted on for their professionalism. Such websites and portals range between $500 and $1000. As a member of CAPIC, this advertising tool is free!
Contest and Shows
Exclusive to CAPIC members, Xpose and Rodeo are yearly national contests with a huge impact! Xpose finalists see their pictures printed in a book distributed to art buyers across the country and exposed during the photography festival in Toronto. Similarly, the highly attended student contest Rodeo is exposed but with the extra reward of great prizes from sponsors.
Double Vision … where a photographer and an Illustrator are paired up to create portraits of each other, which are then put on display, side by side, at a Gallery event. Once a month CAPIC hosts a Xchange ‘pub’ evening, where all members and non-members, along with ad agency people, are invited to exchange ideas and their work. CAPIC also hosts various Seminars and Workshops throughout the year.

The Mentored
My name is Jason Matos and I am a recent graduate of the Humber Photography program. After graduation, I was handed my diploma confirming that I am a 'photographer' and then I was gracefully thrown out into the cold abyss of the professional photographic world.
Upon graduation, I took on an large 'archiving project' with Michael Kohn, a Toronto based food photographer. Food photography... positively the last area of photography that I ever expected to be involved in.
Out of this ' archiving project', we have formed a great mentor-student relationship... it amazes me how situations evolve. Working for Michael is not a 9-5 job... I come to his studio and do archiving and back-up. It's what occurs while I am working for Michael that has helped me so much with everything from my career to my confidence level.
Michael has quickly become a mentor to me. We constantly discuss the current 'photographic climate'... he critiques my work, my mailers, my website and in turn he asks for my opinion on his work and respects my critical input.
Some success this week... my first request from an art director to come in with my portfolio.

The Mentor
I was not looking for someone to mentor. I was looking for some help in archiving tons of digital images. The relationship that I have with Jason has worked in both directions.
I can help Jason move his business to the next level in terms of his branding, marketing etc. What was unexpected for me was the generous help and advise that Jason has given back in terms of his expertise in social marketing such as facebook, blogging and more.
This relationship is a win win for both of us.

Following Chase ... Enticing Your Clients Through Social Media
On Thursday, November 12th, 2009 the Toronto Chapter of CAPIC hosted a progressive
event at the Gladstone Hotel.
“Following Chase – Enticing Your Clients Through Social Media”
Afficher / Masquer tout l'article »
Game day started with meeting the famed Chase Jarvis and his partner in crime and studio manager Scott. We sat by a window in the Gladstone’s café with sun streaming in and great vibe’s flowing. We talked a little business and looked over the plan for the evening. Chase asked if there was anything he could do to ensure everyone coming that evening was going to walk away satisfied. We discussed where the talk could go and Chase said, “Don’t worry Rob, I’ll be the last man standing at the end of the night, I will stay until every last question is answered!”. I thought to myself, this guy is the real deal. After a really good coffee and a little chocolate indulgence we parted ways and started prep for the big night.
We found ourselves back at the Gladstone for a Toronto board meet-up at 4:30pm. Three hours and counting until blast off, pressures on! Chase had tweaked and prepped all afternoon and was ready to hit the stage. The crack
team of CAPIC event specialists raced into action and the North Ballroom of the Gladstone was quickly transformed into a laid back, easygoing event space for our big event. Finally, months of planning all coming to life in a matter of hours. As the room quickly filled the excitement grew and Chase roamed the space meeting and greeting our guests.
7:30 hit and it was show time, Chase delivered a truly inspirational talk covering his brand, social media and his methodology of “Create, Share and Sustain” He mentioned Battleships, Destroyers and a whole bunch of other crazy ideas that all made a whole lot of sense and left the audience feeling inspired and excited about photography and connecting with the community. If there is any one thing to take away from his talk, it’s that the only thing standing in our way of success is fear. As long as you create great “stuff” and work really hard, only fear will hold you back.
After the talk Chase rolled into a book signing with his latest book “ The Best Camera Is The One That’s With You”. He spent at least a couple of minutes with each and every person answering questions, signing and having a photo.
True to his word, the evening rolled into a totally unplugged atmosphere and the remaining gang gathered in close and continued to ask questions and chat with
Chase and Scott until close to 1:30 in the morning! In the end, Chase and Scott wrapped up their gear, said their good byes and left smiling and satisfied. It was
off to NYC in the morning and another event!
With out a doubt, all the hard work by all those who helped make this idea a reality paid off. The energy was undeniable and the momentum epic. We had pulled off a great event for our members, the community and everyone that loves image creation. We suspect we have crossed a threshold and find ourselves highly motivated to bring our members and the community bigger, better and more relevant events.
On occasion I am asked “why join CAPIC, what can it do for me??? I say to you, what can you do for CAPIC. As a group we are strong and with the support of it’s members CAPIC is poised to grow at lighting speed. We need each other now
more than ever to bring our amazing community closer
together. We must join together and share a few secrets, lend a hand and work hard to grow as a group and sustain this wonderfully vibrant community we work so hard to maintain. Why not jump on board with us and share your ideas and inspirations for a better day, month, year and future!
Thanks so much for your support from all of us at CAPIC and your Toronto chapter!

Here’s some kind words we received from the community at large:
CAPIC on the Rise
by Heather Morton
“After years of questionable relevancy, CAPIC is suddenly showing signs that it really wants to serve it’s constituents by hosting truly pertinent events.
I trace this back to the No Uncertain Terms event of last January which introduced Toronto audiences (and the rest of the country through the miracle of webcasting) to the PLUS Initiative. And I also must give CAPIC
major props for bringing Chase Jarvis to town last week.”
“I just wanted to congratulate CAPIC for the great event you held last night with Chase Jarvis. Not only is Chase a very successful 'social marketer' and a great speaker, it is visionary of CAPIC to bring to our smaller market in Canada a speaker who is truly doing something new and different in a big market like the US. I predict a new age of CAPIC involvement. Please keep bringing this quality of
programming to our city to inspire, inform, and coax innovation and creativity. Please thank all involved.”
Best regards

“Thank you all - wonderful event! Exceeded expectations.
Thank you for the extended conversations. Here are a few moments from the event. Plus the last one made at morning coffee - in honor of Chase... Again - abundant thanks for all your efforts to make the event happen. It looked and felt seamless.”

“I was at the Chase Jarvis Event and the one thing he said that made me want to join CAPIC is be part of your community, and make it better. Make your community better. It was the best event CAPIC has ever done.”

Filip Smola Thanks for signing my Book yesterday, even though I was not able to make it... and I will make it up to my buddy mike... Hope you had a good time in Toronto... I heard good things... Cheers.
Carissa Ball-Stewart Chase, it was great meeting you yesterday, but more importantly - listening to everything you had to say. I came there with my marketing hat on, knowing that at the very least I'd get a great case study about success through social media. But your message transcends that of the photography world, and really
could/should be brought to a broader audience. Somehow, I'm sure you already know that :)
Darren Eagles Had a great night with you and Scott in Toronto. After the main presentation, the informal get together with those who stayed until the hotel booted us out of the room at 1:00 am was great!! We might have been there all night if they hadn't! Thanks!!!
Kelvin Young Yo Chase! It's Kelvin from Toronto~ Awesome talk tonight at the Gladstone Hotel. I will definitely be in touch with Scott with regards to interning for you guys. Hope to see you again soon! Have fun in NY tomorrow =]
“When the choice “to go or not to go” comes up, the answer is always “go”.”
It’s noon on Thursday November 12 ’09, I log into my emails for the first time in a few days. Finally have a chance to look through my buffet of blogs and unread
tweets. I’m still barely awake and trying to recover from a 14 straight days of crazy jobs. I was looking forward to relaxing with friends and enjoying the unusually warm November weather. Now, it’s 12:30 and what do I notice? Chase Jarvis is speaking for CAPIC Toronto in 7 hours and I’m 6 hours away in Montreal. I’ve been religiously following Chase’s blog posts and tweets for 2 years now.
Needless to say, I registered for the talk, booked a hotel for that night through Hotwire and drove to Toronto.
My spontaneity was not in vain.
At the Gladstone Hotel, Chase spoke about social
media. If you don’t know what that is, you are already behind the times. Through his charm, enthusiasm and charisma, Chase delivered into uncensored details about his blogging, twitting, behind the scene videos of major international campaigns and volunteer work in the photo community. However, the night did not end when his speech did.
After his book signing, and until a little past 1 am, Chase casually sipped his beer and chatted it up with those of us who stayed behind. No matter the question or
number of beers or time of night, he was just as excited to be there, then we were to hear him digress.
I woke up one day, spontaneously drove 6 hours to hear a man speak, spent the evening and part of a night drinking and conversing with him and others present, checked in to my hotel room for the evening and drove home. I met great people, had a great time and I’d do it all over again in a heart beat.

Mobile Photographer's Moving Picture Takes 1st Place at International Photography Awards
Vancouver photographer Kristopher Grunert has just received confirmation that his innovative and stirring time-lapse photography project titled "My City Moves Me" has taken 1st place in the 2009 International Photography Awards - Moving Image category.

The work is a series of 712 individual photos linked together to create the illusion of movement, emphasizing the life and breath of structures, and features the Vancouver Sky Train.
"The IPA has become one of the most significant awards in the industry. It is an absolute honor to receive such recognition, especially in this new category. Moving pictures has obviously been around for a long time but many feel this the beginning of a new era as technology is allowing still photographers to apply their trained eye to the medium."

Ironically, the announcement comes just as Grunert himself is embarking on his own moving picture--the decision to take his Vancouver based company and studio GRUNERT IMAGING mobile. While travel has always been a part of his 10 year career--photographing mines, wind farms, water treatment plants and prime real estate projects across Canada, the US, UK, and Central/ South America Grunert feels ready for a significant creative pilgrimage.
He will be feeding his visual appetite with new landscapes, imagery, and experiences as he travels between urban, rural and industrial scenes from the Alberta Oil Sands, Saskatchewan, Toronto,New York,LA and Mexico.
Not only is it important to me to expand my visual repertoire, my goal is to extend the reach of the geographic markets that I serve."
Part of the journey will include his annual trip to NYC for the Lucie Awards(the Oscar Awards of photography) where this year his new series of still photographs "The Seylynn Lights"has received honorable mention and his 1st place entry"My City Moves Me"will be featured in the Annual IPA Best of Show.
The debut of this exhibition takes place as a prelude to the Lucies, held this year on Sat. Oct. 17at the infamous Splashlight Studios in Soho.
As usual, he will also attend the PDN Photo Expo where he reconnects with international suppliers and "sharpens his saw" by learning technical and business skills from industry leaders.
In the new year, Grunert Imaging will launch what he calls digital asset management solutions for the corporate market.
"I have seen companies struggle to manage their libraries of digital images as they continue to grow, and I want to make sure that my clients can use the assets I create in the most effective manner possible. If managed correctly, the photographs have the potential to increase in value exponentially for uses such as publicity, corporate communications, award submissions, and company morale."
Kristopher emphasizes that he will have a continued presence in Vancouver, servicing his clients and continuing to work with his local suppliers.
"I am very proud of the relationships that I have built here--they are the foundation of my business and I am committed to building on that foundation. My intention is for everyone I associate with to benefit from this endeavor.
Grunert has been creating memorable commercial photographs for local design firms such as Porcaro Communications servicing clients such asF inning International, Teck Cominco, and BC Ferries) and most recently with DDB Canada (Karacters Design)for the Vancouver Convention Centre. He was also the co-founder and co-curator of LUMEN gallery with Emmanuel St.Juste, which has brought light-inspired art and events to the city, and has served on the board of the Canadian Association of Photographers and Illustrators (CAPIC) as VP of membership for the last 2 years. He is looking forward to meeting other members across the country and contributing to the prairie chapter in the new year.
During his mobile experiment, Kristopher and wife Chelsea will be using his family homestead in Saskatchewan as their headquarters and are excited to be converting a grain silo into his new studio. The Grunert farm has been in operation for over 130 years, and Grunert's adventure will begin next month by working and documenting the annual harvest with three generations of his family present.
"The Seylynn Lights"series is being featured at On The Rise Artist Collective, 2231 Granville St. Vancouver, BC from Wednesday to Sunday, 11 am - 6 pm until August 30th.

If your name was drawn as a featured artist, you'll need to prepare a short bio or statement to appear beneath your image. The image you chose for the online campaign doesn't need to be the same image you submitted to XPOSE, as long as it meets our standards for content and quality.
And while we're on the topic ...
Now's the time to UPDATE YOUR GALLERY PAGES! With all these potential clients being driven to the CAPIC web site, we need to give them something impressive to look at! Gallery space is included free with most CAPIC memberships (Sustaining, Assistant & Student members do not qualify).
