This once-a-month series brings together diverse individuals for a candid, in-person interview. The DX selects the interviewer and that individual has carte blanche on who to interview. And the result is…
Interviewer Marco Cibola is a freelance graphic artist working out of the sleepy town of Dundas, Ontario, about an hour outside of Toronto. His clients include Time magazine, Financial Times London, New York Times, ESPN, Nylon, Element Skateboards, Random House, The Walrus, and many others. Marco is also a part-time instructor at Sheridan College in the Illustration program. Marco’s artwork has been exhibited in galleries in North America and Europe, and he continues to work on personal projects that deal with the themes of time, repetition and growth.
Interviewee Jacqui Oakley has been a professional illustrator for over ten years, working with such clients as Rolling Stone, Spin, ESPN, The Financial Times (UK), PEN Canada, & The Atlantic. Specializing in hand-lettering and portraiture, she loves unexpectedly blending patterns and textures with highly stylized yet naturalistic renderings. Her work is typically inked and painted with good old-fashioned oil or acrylic and elbow grease. Born in Canada, Jacqui spent her formative years living in Bahrain, Zambia, England and Libya, while her
parents traveled for work. In 1989, she returned to Canada where she would graduate from the Illustration program at Sheridan College’s School of Art and Design in 2001. In addition to her work as a freelance illustrator, Jacqui has been an instructor at OCAD in Toronto since 2006. She currently lives and works in Hamilton. Jacqui’s paintings have been exhibited in Toronto and across the US.
